Tales From A Hungry Life A Memoir with Recipes is the story of a not-so-typical 1970s American family that lived, loved, and ate like there was no tomorrow. Italian and Puerto Rican—and definitely American—they were the Sopranos with a Spanish twist, a whole lot less money, and only their own blood on their hands. Meet the distinctly ethnic families brought together when Lou met Sarita…and six boys and one girl bound them together for good. Visit their tiny brick house in Queens, New York, where rock-n-roll blasted from the basement while spaghetti and meatballs or chicken and rice simmered on the stove. Along the way, you’ll encounter the relatives and friends who helped them face hope and despair, love and loss, for better or for worse, with a knife and fork in their hands. This collection of sometimes hilarious, sometimes poignant stories goes back to the days when disco was king and rock-n-roll was rebellion, the Dorothy Hamill was the “in” hairstyle, and no self-respecting Italian ate bottled spaghetti sauce. It’s filled with a hearty helping of old family recipes and stories that celebrate a time, a place, and a group of people who knew one thing to eat together was to live.

This is even better than the ebook version. There is nothing like holding the book in your hands and seeing the pictires of the people whose life is unfolding before you to get that real close up feeling while you are laughing away your troubles. And on top of it all it will bring back the sweet memories of your life, times and the people that you hold dear. Some of the recipies are good for those of us who like to indulge in the great art of savoring food. The author tells the story of her life with great humor and charm. I loved it.

Tales From A Hungry Life A Memoir With Recipes Maria Schulz 9780991285013 Books Reviews

Enjoyed from cover to cover. Certainly brought the reader back in time. Can easily relate coming from a large Irish-Catholic family from Queens. Felt like we could have been the Lagalante's neighbor. A story told with humor and sensitivity. I found myself in the kitchen after many chapters...yummy. Can't wait for the next chapter. Recommended book to family members. Loved it!
Started reading and couldn't put it down. Life is good and it takes a good writer to bring it all home. Enjoy!
A funny, honest and heartwarming memoir about a large family growing up in Queens NY in the 1970's. A collection of stories and recipes that portray a lively family life of a close knit Italian-Puerto Rican Catholic family. This book will make you laugh and also make feel as though you know this fun family by the time you finish this must read portrait of an American family! Of course it will also make you want to EAT and try the recipes included in each chapter! A must read account of a "nostalgic" age of growing up in NYC! (Also see the author's blog on Wordpress!)
Have not tried the recipes but the stories taste good! Living through those days in NYC, Catholic school, Queens logic, multiracial do's and don'ts I can tell you it's a slice of real life. With a side of big laughs. Stories of family and friends. Universal. or maybe too twisted to be Universal but you probably had a weird family down the block you could recommend the book to.
If you loved Jean Shepherd's A Christmas Story, you're exactly the right person for this book. The story of a quirky family told from a unique and singular point of view. There's the one girl with six brothers angle. There's the crazy extended family and neighbors. And there are the memories of the 1970s and 1980s (Son of Sam, All in the Family, so many more). And the meals, oh the meals! You will snort with laughter. I guarantee it.
Most of this happened just like Maria remembered. She was kinder than she had to be to some of us. Moments in time that bring a wave of feeling that is indescribable. Family. Friends. And good eats. If you love these things you'll love this book. All of us grow up in very specific ways. This book is a personal story that has universal appeal. The book deserves 5 Stars. I left a star off the review just to tick her off.
This book made me feel as though I was having Sunday dinner with The Lagalante family, a family I only recently met through the works of Maria Schultz. Her writing transports you back to a day when life was so much more simple. A time where families gathered to talk, laugh and of course eat. I enjoyed every chapter and savored every moment knowing that the book would eventually have to end. You will meet people in her life that you will swear you know or hoped you would eventually meet. This is not a cookbook but recipes are inside following every chapter. Some were very familiar and so much more simple then today's recipes. Maria Schultz shows us that Its not the complexity of the recipe that matters, but the people that you share it with. I loved it.
